Preparing for a day in the snow, steam locomotive #40, a 4-6-0 built by Baldwin in 1910, warms up in the shops at the Nevada Northern Railway.
A tribute to Nevada Northern steam engine #40 can be seen in downtown Ely, NV. See the next image for more info.
A tradition during the winter photographer's shoot, the "dual" exit from the roundhouse is a delight to watch.
Built in 1917 by the O. F. Jordan Company of Chicago this spreader, #360, collects snow early in the AM.
A brief moment of blur sky and sunshine provided some great photo oppotunities at the Ely shops.
Where else in the world can a person still see an working steam crane? Here Nevada Northern wrecking crane A is a steam powered, 100 ton crane that is over a 100 years old and is still able to lift derailed cars back onto the tracks.
Pulling past some wheel sets, engine #40 leaves the engine house and heads West to take on water and coal.
The man behind the "Beauty and the "Beast" photos, Matthew M. I wonder though, which gallery would this photo fall under? In all fairness, his makeup was a little off for this shot. He does take some great photos, and you can see them at: http://www.losttracksoftime.com/
Steam locomotive #93, a 2-8-0 built by Alco in 1909, pulls through the yard in Ely, NV.
Although modern compared to the NN wrecking crane A, the Kennecott Copper diesel-electric crane look great under the yard lights and fresh snow.
Steam locomotive #81, a Baldwin built 2-8-0 collects dust at the back of the shop in Ely, Nevada. Having last seen fire in 1960, the engine is classified as "inoperable". Who knows, maybe somebody with deep pockets will disagree.
Nevada Northern executive director Mark Bassett watches as engine #93 pulls into the shop.
Diesel locomotive #109 is an Alco built RS-3 unit built in 1950. Still operational it is a delight to watch even for non-diesel lovers.
Having cleared the switch, #40 maneuvers in the yard at Ely, NV before picking up passengers at the depot.
Rotary Snowplow B was built in 1907 by Alco for the Nevada Northern and although it is currently not operational, it received some attention and looks much improved from my previous visit.
A front view of the massive rotary blades on Rotary plow B.
A "white out" as both steam engines wait in the yard.
Preparing to pull out the passenger cars, engine 40 reverses in the RIP building.
Hot and steamy work, the crew prepares the engine for a cold day ahead.
OK, where else in the world do you get to see genuine, non-posed tumble weeds in a locomotive work shop?
It seems everything railroad related is heavy.
In a scene that could have been 100 years ago, Nevada Northern #40 pulls 2 passenger filled with train fans up to the high-line.
Also heading to the high-line is locomotive #93. It is pulling a work train for use in some run-bys.
RS-2 #105, an Alco product built in 1949, sits in the shadows at the back of the Ely shops.
The back shops in Ely provide endless, fascinating scenes that transport visitors decades into the past.
A shot through the old coaling tower as #40 gets loaded with coal the new way: front-end loader on a ramp.
